Why Directions Matter Even with Google Maps

GPS is great — until it isn’t:

Spotty signal in mountains, islands, and rural areas
Wrong pins on maps for smaller guesthouses and local restaurants
One-way roads and sois that apps don’t account for
Shortcuts locals know that no algorithm will suggest
Building real connections — asking a local for directions almost always leads to more than just an answer

Local tip: In Thailand, 7-Eleven stores and petrol stations are the most reliable navigation landmarks — there are thousands of them, staff always know the area, and they’re open 24 hours.

Asking for Directions

The Essential Starter

Always open with a polite ขอโทษครับ/ค่ะ (khɔ̌ɔ thôot khráp/khâ) — “Excuse me” — before asking anything. It shows respect and gets you a much friendlier response.

You: ขอโทษครับ วัดใกล้ๆ นี้อยู่ที่ไหนครับ (khɔ̌ɔ thôot khráp, wát glâi glâi níi yùu thîi nǎi khráp) “Excuse me, where is the nearest temple?”

Local: ตรงไปแล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายที่แยกครับ อยู่ฝั่งขวามือ (trong pai lɛ́ɛo líao sáai thîi yɛ̂ɛk khráp, yùu fàng khwǎa mɯɯ) “Go straight then turn left at the junction. It’s on the right side.”

You: ไกลไหมครับ เดินไปได้ไหม (glai mǎi khráp, dəən pai dâi mǎi) “Is it far? Can I walk?”

Local: ไม่ไกลเลยครับ เดินประมาณห้านาที (mâi glai ləəi khráp, dəən prà-maan hâa naa-thii) “Not far at all, about a five-minute walk.”

You: ขอบคุณมากครับ (khɔ̀ɔp khun mâak khráp) “Thank you very much.”

Scenario 2: Directing a Taxi Driver

You: ไปโรงแรม The Riverside ครับ รู้จักไหมครับ (pai roong-rɛɛm The Riverside khráp, rúu jàk mǎi khráp) “To The Riverside hotel please. Do you know it?”

Driver: รู้จักครับ ใกล้ท่าเรือใช่ไหม (rúu jàk khráp, glâi thâa rɯa châi mǎi) “Yes I know it. Near the pier, right?”

You: ใช่ครับ ตรงข้ามกับธนาคารกสิกร (châi khráp, trong khâam gàp thá-naa-khaan gà-sì-gɔɔn) “Yes, opposite the Kasikorn bank.”

Driver: โอเคครับ ประมาณสิบนาทีครับ (oo-khee khráp, prà-maan sìp naa-thii khráp) “Okay, about ten minutes.”

You: จอดหน้าโรงแรมได้เลยนะครับ (jɔ̀ɔt nâa roong-rɛɛm dâi ləəi ná khráp) “You can stop right in front of the hotel.”

Scenario 3: When You’re Lost

You: ขอโทษค่ะ ฉันหลงทาง หาซอยนี้ไม่เจอเลยค่ะ (khɔ̌ɔ thôot khâ, chǎn long thaang, hǎa sɔɔi níi mâi jəə ləəi khâ) “Excuse me, I’m lost. I can’t find this soi.”

Local: ขอดูชื่อซอยหน่อยได้ไหมคะ (khɔ̌ɔ duu chɯ̂ɯ sɔɔi nɔ̀i dâi mǎi khâ) “Can I see the soi name?”

You: ซอยสิบสองค่ะ แถวๆ ปั๊มน้ำมัน (sɔɔi sìp sɔ̌ɔng khâ, thɛ̂ɛo thɛ̂ɛo pám náam man) “Soi 12, near a petrol station.”

Local: โอ้ อยู่อีกฝั่งนึงค่ะ ต้องกลับหลังแล้วเลี้ยวขวาที่วงเวียน (ôo, yùu ìik fàng nɯ̀ng khâ, tɔ̂ng glàp lǎng lɛ́ɛo líao khwǎa thîi wong-wiian) “Oh, it’s on the other side. You need to turn around and turn right at the roundabout.”

Cultural Tips for Getting Directions 🙏

Thais Are Genuinely Helpful

Asking a Thai person for directions will almost always get you a warm, enthusiastic response — even if they’re not entirely sure. This leads to one important caveat: a Thai person may give you confident-sounding directions even when they’re guessing, as saying “I don’t know” can feel uncomfortable. If you get contradictory answers from two different people, try a third — or ask someone at a shop or restaurant who is rooted to that location.

The Soi System

Bangkok and many Thai cities use a soi (ซอย) numbering system off main roads. Odd-numbered sois are on one side, even on the other. Soi 3 and Soi 4 are not necessarily near each other — they can be hundreds of metres apart on opposite sides of the street. Always confirm which side of the road you need.

Use Landmarks, Not Just Addresses

Thai addresses include road names and soi numbers, but locals often navigate by landmark rather than address. Giving a driver the street address alone may cause confusion. Always add a nearby landmark: ใกล้ 7-Eleven (glâi sèt-ì-wen) — “near 7-Eleven” — is remarkably effective.

”ไม่ไกล” Can Mean Different Things

ไม่ไกล (not far) is relative. In a city, it usually means walkable. In rural areas, it might mean a 20-minute drive. Follow up with ประมาณกี่นาที (prà-maan gìi naa-thii) — “about how many minutes?” — to get a concrete answer.
